The first glimpse at Black Mirror Season 5 has arrived, and if you haven't already been side-eyeing that smart home device that plays your music and also listens in on your conversations, well, this series might just do the trick.
The trailer reveals that the first post-Bandersnatch season will consists of three separate stories, and in at least one of them Alexa is getting a makeover. Cute as she may look with those pink wigs and kind words, she'll probably still be be pretty dangerous — or at least inspire some kind of unhealthy emotional dependency with her teenage owner, who coins herself a loner.
"It's not a doll," someone tells her of the deceptively cute doll-robot. "That thing is a poison."
The preview also reveals a first look at Miley Cyrus' role in the series, and it appears to be pretty meta, as she's styled like a pop music performer who must entertain the masses and pose in a bathtub full of Pepto-Bismol for some reason. Considering how similar her pastel headpieces look to the ones on the doll device, perhaps there's a connection.
Meanwhile, we also get a look at Marvel's Anthony Mackie, whose character looks to be keeping secrets from a woman played by Nicole Beharie. Historically, anyone who uses those memory-reviewing eye pieces on Black Mirror is usually in for a world of personal pain.
Topher Grace can also be spotted in the fray, and Andrew Scott appears as a gunman who's driven to the edge. Last but not least, we see a woman going to town with trick moves in a full-bodied virtual reality version of Mortal Kombat, and that last bit is the only part of any of this with the kind of sunnier tone Charlie Brooker promised for this season.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Damson Idris, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport, and Ludi Lin will also appear in the season.
Black Mirror Season 5 premieres on Netflix on June 5.
