It might not quiiiiite be the spookiest time of the year just yet, but I think we can call it open season on Halloween celebrations with this week's kickoff of American Horror Story: 1984. The slasher film-inspired season of the anthology series is already shrouded in internet speculation, but in case tracking clues in the Murphyverse isn't to your liking, here are two other premieres to check out this week.
These recommendations courtesy of TV Guide are here to help you through your weekend binge. And if you're looking for even more suggestions, head over to TV Guide's Watch This Now! page, which has hand-picked recommendations for all the best shows you can start watching immediately.
1. American Horror Story: 1984
Ryan Murphy's hit FX anthology horror series returns for Season 9 with a new chapter, titled American Horror Story: 1984. The name is a nod to the era the birthed the slasher genre (the AHS teasers have a very specific Friday the 13th energy) and injected ghoulish glee into mainstream culture. AHS regulars Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and Cody Fern return to play new characters who all end up working at the mysterious Camp Redwood. Not a lot is known about their characters, but rest assured things will take a sinister turn with a serial killer named Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch) lurking about.
2. First Wives Club
Based on the classic 1996 film, BET's reimagining of First Wives Club is modern look into the romantic ups and downs of three successful black women. Played by the incomparable Michelle Buteau, Jill Scott, and Ryan Michelle Bathe, these three friends come together to help one of their own get through a bitter divorce. Oh, and yes, there will be a "You Don't Own Me" scene — but expect this cast to put their own special shine on it.
Criminal is a testament to great storytelling. The unique Netflix experiment spans 12 episodes set across four countries, and each trio of stories takes place on the same set: one police interrogation room and the two hallways that lead to it. The brilliance of this series comes from the claustrophobic conditions; each episode builds the stakes by pitting a suspect against detectives in a brutal battle of wits and manipulation. With guest stars like David Tennant and Hayley Atwell, the series delivers the high-stakes tension of great thrillers without relying on action at all.
