At the end of Season 2, This Is Us gave us a small peek at where we'll find everyone a year after Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby's (Chris Sullivan) wedding, but our first look at Season 3 just gave us way more information about how and when we should expect them to get there.
The flash-forwards in the Season 2 finale revealed a depressed Toby laying catatonically in bed while Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe (Melanie Liburd) took a plane to Vietnam. The first footage from Season 3 promises some baby drama between Toby and Kate in the year after their marriage, and although they seem ready and eager to try to get pregnant again on the night of their wedding, we see Kate tell her friends that she wished for a baby, but that wish will never come true. The pointed look she gives Toby has us wondering whether their marriage is already on the ropes and if that's what will send Toby spiraling into his depression.
As for Kevin, we don't know why he's headed to Vietnam — though it obviously has something to do with Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and the time he spent there during the war — but we do get a glimpse of the beginnings of his relationship with Zoe; specifically, the dangerous ground he's going to find himself on when Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) finds out he's sleeping with her cousin. Run, Kevin! RUN!
Most exciting of all, though, is the fact Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore tease that we'll get to see the early days of Jack and Rebecca's courtship, including what else happened on the night they met. Cuteness warning: carnivals and adorable candy apple encounters are involved!
As for the flash-forward that journeyed even further into the future, where we saw an older Randall (Sterling K. Brown) talking to a grown up Tess (Iantha Richardson) about seeing a mysterious "her," there were zero hints in the new footage about what's to come in that storyline. However, Brown does tease that the identity of the woman in question will be illuminated over the course of the season.
This Is Us returns for Season 3 Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.
