A familiar face will be joining Morgan (Lennie James) in Texas on Fear the Walking Dead. Austin Amelio, who played Dwight on The Walking Dead Seasons 6 through 8, will be joining the spin-off in Season 5, ComicBook.com reports.
Amelio is the second Walking Dead actor to transition to Fear after James, who joined the show at the beginning of its creatively rebooted fourth season. Amelio has been absent from Season 9 of The Walking Dead after Dwight was exiled from Virginia by Daryl (Norman Reedus) at the end of Season 8. In Daryl's eyes, Dwight's work helping the Alexandrian coalition as a Savior double agent meant his life could be spared, but his crimes as a Savior before he flipped meant he could not stay. So he rode off on his motorcycle in search of his missing ex-wife Sherry (Christine Evangelista), and apparently will be resurfacing in Texas (Amelio's home state).
In Season 5 of Fear, the Morgan-led survivors will be going on missions to help people in need from their home base at a repurposed denim factory.
It's an interesting move, since the characters of Dwight and Morgan never interacted on The Walking Dead. But Dwight is a fairly popular character and Amelio is a well-liked actor among the fanbase, so it's not an unwelcome crossover. It will be interesting to see if Evangelista shows up too, especially since the show she left The Walking Dead for, The Arrangement, has been canceled.
Fear the Walking Dead returns in the spring, while The Walking Dead Season 9 picks back up Sunday, Feb. 10 at 9/8c on AMC.
