At the risk of overusing The Big Bang Theory's signature catchphrase, BAZINGA. Fans of CBS's hit sitcom now have another reason to consider subscribing to HBO Max — the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service has now gained the exclusive domestic streaming rights to The Big Bang Theory, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And you'd have to be almost as gifted with numbers as Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) to count up the amount of dollars it took to secure this deal.
Though THR doesn't reveal an exact number, Warner Bros. TV's deal for The Big Bang Theory is reportedly billions of dollars, according to the outlet's sources — making it much pricier than other recent streaming agreements, including the $425 million HBO paid to snatch Friends from Netflix at the start of 2020. The deal secures The Big Bang Theory for HBO Max for five years; syndicated reruns will also run on TBS through 2028.
In a statement, WarnerMedia chairman Robert Greenblatt said, "Few shows define a generation and capture mainstream zeitgeist like The Big Bang Theory. We're thrilled that HBO Max will be the exclusive streaming home for this comedy juggernaut when we launch in the spring of 2020. This show has been a hit virtually around the globe, it's one of the biggest shows on broadcast television of the last decade, and the fact that we get to bring it to a streaming platform for the first time in the U.S. is a coup for our new offering."
Reports of the company's interest in securing the streaming rights to The Big Bang Theory, along with fellow Chuck Lorre sitcom Two and a Half Men, first emerged in August and claimed that WarnerMedia was looking at a price tag of $1.5 billion for both.
Lorre also responded to Tuesday's news by saying, "I am forever grateful to have been part of something as extraordinary as The Big Bang Theory. All of us — Bill Prady, Steven Molaro, Steve Holland, and the amazing writing staff, cast and crew, recognize that 12 seasons of laughter is a gift to be cherished. And now we are extremely excited that TBBT will be joining the HBO Max lineup and be available to both existing and future fans of the show. Laughter has legs!"
The Big Bang Theory, which concluded its final season in May, will make it streaming debut on HBO Max with all 12 seasons.
HBO Max is expected to arrive in 2020.
