NBC is still trying to pull at your heartstrings.
The network that is home to This Is Us has picked up the show Council of Dads, a new drama series about a loving father whose life is turned upside down in the wake of a cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, he's able to call on his closest friends to act as "back-up dads" to his four children. There's Anthony (Clive Standen — who looks almost unrecognizable from his role on Vikings), his oldest friend; Larry (Michael O'Neill), his AA sponsor; and Oliver (J. August Richards), his surgeon who also happens to be the best friend of his wife, Robin (Sarah Wayne Callies).
Scott's friends agree to support his family through it all in case he ever can't be there himself. Honestly, it feels like someone took half of the premise of Full House, added a life-threatening medical diagnosis instead of a dead spouse, and turned it into an hourlong drama. The This Is Us crowd should eat it right up.
The series also stars Tom Everett Scott, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, and Steven Silver. Tony Phelan and Joan Rater will serve as writers and executive producers alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed will executive produce.

Council of Dads joins Bluff City Law and Sunnyside as NBC's pickups for the fall season. The network has already renewed The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., Law & Order: SVU, New Amsterdam, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, Superstore, and Will & Grace.
