Sadly, Big Little Lies fans did not get to see Reese Witherspoon chuck a giant ice cream cone at Meryl Streep's head in Sunday night's episode of the HBO drama, but there's still hope that we might get to witness this amazing moment eventually.
The scene in question was previewed when paparazzi caught Witherspoon throwing ice cream at Streep while the second season was filming last summer. Witherspoon later called the experience of pelting the esteemed actress on the back of her wig one of the all-time highlights of her career. However, the scene that aired on Sunday aired without all that sticky savagery: Madeline (Witherspoon) and Mary Louise (Streep) instead went their separate ways without any ice cream hurling. Many fans, disappointed that they didn't get to see the mini food fight, aired their grievances online — with Witherspoon herself acknowledging this summer bummer.
And I will always share these memories with you all 🍦☺️ 🤸🏼♀️ https://t.co/n2wT980KFO— Reese Witherspoon (@ReeseW) July 8, 2019
After all her efforts to take her grandchildren away from their mother — not to mention her terrible decision to move into the same complex as her late son's rape victim — getting a bit of dairy in her hair is the least Mary Louise could suffer. So for those who still really want to watch that punishment unfold anyway, there may be good news.
Streep told ET Online that the cut footage might just be sprinkled into the DVD extras when Big Little Lies Season 2 is available for home purchase. "[Reese] just told me it's not in the show!" Streep said at the Season 2 premiere. "It's [going to be] in the DVD extras."
Assuming the encounter does make its way to the deleted scenes, you'll just have to treat yourself to the DVDs to see this not-so-sweet little skirmish unfold on your screen.
Big Little Lies airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
