With Thanksgiving right around the corner and the holiday season fast approaching, The Star is a timely animated Christmas comedy made for kids. The movie’s narrative centers on the Nativity of Jesus, and the story is told through the comedic exploits of a chubby donkey named Bo (voiced by Steven Yeun) and his friend Dave (Keegan-Michael Key), a groovy dove with a penchant for singing and dancing. Bo escapes from the miller who owns him and ends up being cared for by Mary (Gina Rodriguez), who tends to his injured leg. After Bo heals up, he, Mary, and Joseph (Zachary Levi) set out on a journey to Bethlehem together.

The movie might be a blast for Christian audiences -- young and old alike -- due to its novel take on the well-known story. Yet it’s too bad that the film isn’t very compelling for non-Christian viewers. Kids may find that it lacks the energy and brightness of other animated features, and the plot is too dull and straightforward for adults. Sure, there are a few mildly funny moments sprinkled throughout (Tracy Morgan’s goofy, off-kilter line readings as a wayward camel are a particular standout), but otherwise, the comedy is mostly uninspired. And the film manages to waste its impressive vocal talent: Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, and Kelly Clarkson lend their voices, but the story doesn’t give them much of a chance to shine. For those eager for a movie celebrating the birth of Jesus, The Star may be worth watching. For other viewers, there are better ways to get into the Christmas spirit.
